WHY HELP?• Globally, some 121 million children are still out of school – 65 million of them girls. • In Latin America and the Caribbean 205 million people live in poverty and 79 million people live in extreme poverty. • 220 million Latin Americans (about 44% of the region’s population) live on less than $2 per day. Over half of them are children. • Departments of education across Latin America end up building schools with 15-20 classrooms and "laboratories," but without a budget for maintenance and no funding for equipment or supplies.• At the elementary school level in Latin America, only 47% of girls and 41% of the boys are enrolled in school. |
